- Date when pictures were taken ( 04/15/2006 - 06/14/2006 - 01/03/2007) shows the habit of trees in spring, summer and winter
- Elms display the "opposite" branching habit.
- Buds of American Elm. The fatter buds that have begun to open are floral buds. The thinner, pointed buds will produce leaves.
- Ulmus americana, American elm, has 3 recognized habits. These trees show the widely recognized "vase shape".
- The red flowers appear before the leaves. The flowers are in clusters and are on drooping stalks that are about 1" long.
- The fruit is a flat samara that has hair around the edge and a deep notch at the tip. The leaves appear after development of the fruit.
- Photo showing the leaves of the Ulmus Americana. The base of the leaf is asymmetrical and looks as though part of one side is missing. The margins are doubly toothed.
- The tip of the leaf of the American elm is pointed. The leaf is darker above and veins are very noticeable both on the upper and lower surfaces of the blade.
- This picture of an American elm shows a noticeable flare at the base of the trunk.
