A distinguishing feature of the Aralia spinosa, is the presence of spikes which is reminiscent of Kalopanax pictus - Castor-leaved aralia which is also members of the Ginseng family

Fruit: Devil's walking stick flowers in July and August, setting fruit
that ripens from September to October.
