- Winter interest: European alder may show both male and female catkins that are dormant and waiting for the next growng season. There may also be persistant "cones" that held the seeds during the previous growing.
- Branch/twig: photo shows buds and new female cones that will develop in coming growing season
- Male structure: Catkins will expand to reveal pollen
- Cones: photo shows open mature "cones" from last growing season. Most seeds will have been dispersed.
