Acer rubrum, or red maple has sothing that is red all year round.
The winter floral buds are red and rounded.
The open before the vegatative buds which are red and pointed.
The male flowers are red, but without petals.
The anthers are on long filaments.
Since Acer rubrum is an early bloomer, the pollen is distributed by wind.
In fall, the leaves may be red and/ or yellow with reddish stems.

The photos on this page are of a pair of Acer rubrum - red maple trees that were located Morton arboretum at Parking 2. The first 4 photos are of the male and female trees through winter, spring, summer and fall. The 5th photo shows only the male in early spring. I don't know why, or exactly when the female was removed.

The remainder of the photos shows the progression of buds, flowers, leaves and fruit from winter through fall.
